Lifestyle Blogs- Reality Vs. Pinterest

Six months ago I would have told you I was the happiest, luckiest person in the world.¬†As of late, I’ve been feeling relatively overwhelmed. Between starting a blog, settling down with C, and figuring/planning out my time until college; it’s really taken a toll on me.

After starting the rough 1.0 version of¬†my blog,¬†I soon discovered Pinterest. At first, I thought of Pinterest as a never ending supply of wonderful inspiration from people with same interests and hobbies that I have. But after a few months of habitually looking at perfect, elite, rich bloggers posting fairy tale pictures with sunshiny words far too sweet for reality, I found myself envious and unsatisfied with my own life.¬†And what caught my attention more-so, these picture perfect people were¬†not from the pages of a magazine but regular people just like you and I. So, Why then, despite my hard efforts, does my life not add up to those of other lifestyle bloggers¬†? Why does my hair never cooperate, why is my sink filled with dishes when I clean endlessly, why do I not wake up feeling¬†peppy and ready to take on the day with an overflowing sense of optimism? I’ll tell you a secret. It’s because life isn’t meant to be perfect. The envious Pinterest pictures, the super-mom pep- It’s staged. Designed specifically to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible.¬†Bloggers ARE real people. They work in Real offices, a lot of times with multiple (Real) people.¬†They have Real photography equipment, running their blogs in much the same way as the Real people who write and photograph for magazines do.¬†And you better believe, most of them¬†have a good amount of financial resource. Blogs require investment.

How To Accept Your Un-Perfect Life. Being an Idealistic person and coming from a very nontraditional family, I decided very young that I wanted to live a traditional life. I day dreamed of fancy clothes, white picket fence houses, super families from the suburbs. I wanted to be a great cook a great hostess. These were my dreams. My ideals.

In reality, I’m a terrible cook, I don’t have tons of money to spend on grand clothes and home furnishings, I can’t do my own hair for anything in the world, and I found that I like to spend more time quietly to myself than hosting or attending social events. And that’s okay. Even though I don’t have the life I always envisioned, I have enough, something more important.¬†God gave me my own unique set of skills, traits, experiences, and blessings that¬†can never be taken from me. And he gave those things to you too! With that in mind, is it really so hard to¬†accept¬†your life of imperfection?

Here are some things you can do when you feel like life is weighing you down:

  • Say no to expectations
  • Write a gratitude list
  • Put the computer/ipad/tablet down, look around you, and start cherishing everything you have.
  • Love yourself- messy hair/frumpy sweatpants and all
  • Love your home- Your favorite decorations and the dirty dishes too (instead of saying your home looks messy, start telling yourself that it looks lived-in)
  • Love your family & all aspects of life- Even on days when you feel groggy¬†and head to the store in Pjs and an un-styled messy bun only to run into your partner’s ex, all decked out in name brand clothes, heels, and flawless makeup. Remember, everyone¬†has weaknesses and everyone has ¬†strengths. Make the best of what you have and be happy( not envious ) of those that are happy in the lives their leading.
  • Remind yourself of the difference between pretty pictures and reality (here are a few good example links) :

How I Organize My Workouts

I was recently asked by one of my blog readers how I organize my workout¬†routines. I’ve never thought of doing a post on it but¬†I¬†am¬†absolutely thrilled¬†to answer this question. The key to not getting bored quick with workouts is variety. But how, you ask, do you keep up with a variety of different workouts when there is so many to choose from? My answer is this: Evernote. Evernote, if you haven’t heard of it yet, is an app/computer program.
I have downloaded both app & computer versions ( they sync)¬†& it is the best thing that has happened to me digitally.¬†I organize EVERYTHING with Evernote. It’s¬†like my own personal ¬†life database. For now though, I’ll just explain how to use this¬†program for organizing fitness routines. My method is very simple and can be understood in 5 Steps.

  • Step One. Download the app or computer program( I recommend the computer version for maneuverability).
  • Step Two. Create Notebooks for each fitness category: Workouts, Stretches, & Yoga are mine. (You can add others i.e, Strength Training, or anything else that applies)fitness blog post two
  • Step Three. Make Notes in each notebook with the names of each of your workouts or when/what the workout is meant for. Here are some example titles: “Workout Set One”, “Morning Stretch Routine”, “Yoga Poses for Relaxation”, “Week Two Workout”, “Ab Exercises”, etc.
  • Step Four. Either write out your workout & reps or post pictures of the¬†workouts into their correct notes & notebooks.
  • Step Five. You can really add your own organizational style to this method. Play with it as much as you like and then you’re done. The next time you get ready to workout, open up your Evernote, search for the¬†pre-planned exercise routine that best suits your needs or setting, and get to it!
